Amarillo, TX – One person was killed and two others, including a 2-year-old child, were critically injured after their vehicle was hit by a suspected intoxicated driver at an intersection in Amarillo Friday night, according to the Amarillo PD.

The deadly collision happened at about 9:40 p.m. on January 3, 2025, at the intersection of Soncy Road and Legend Avenue.

Amarillo police said 29-year-old Carlos Coronado was driving a 2022 Ram 2500 south on Soncy Road in the inside southbound lane when he swerved into northbound traffic to avoid rear-ending another vehicle. In the process, Coronado slammed into a 2019 Ford Escape.

The driver of the Escape was pronounced dead at the scene. Two passengers in the Escape – a 34-year-old woman and a 2-year-old child – were hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

Police said Coronado was arrested and charged with Intoxication Manslaughter and 2 counts of Intoxication Assault. The suspect was booked into the Randall County jail.

The investigation is ongoing.
