Two Killed in San Angelo Two-Vehicle Crash on South Bryant Boulevard at Avenue N; Benjamin Elder Arrested

San Angelo, Texas (March 19, 2021) – Two people were killed Thursday morning in a hit-and-run crash in San Angelo, according to police.

The fatal crash happened on March 18, in the 1300 block of South Bryant Boulevard at the intersection with Avenue N.

Police said a traffic officer was conducting traffic enforcement when he saw a southbound gray Chevrolet Equinox that was traveling above the posted speed limit.

The officer tried to catch up to the Equinox to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver accelerated, ran a red light at the intersection, and struck another vehicle.

The second vehicle fled the scene after the crash.

The Equinox driver, a 17-year-old San Angelo resident, was ejected and was taken to a local hospital with incapacitating injuries.

A 16-year-old boy who was a passenger in the Equinox was pronounced dead at the scene. Another passenger, a 17-year-old girl, was taken to Shannon Medical Center, where she later died.

Two other male passengers in the Equinox, ages 12 and 16, were taken to the hospital with incapacitating injuries.

The hit-and-run vehicle, a tan-colored Explorer Trac, was later found unoccupied and abandoned on the West Loop 306 Frontage Road. It had consistent damage with the crash.

The driver, Benjamin Elder, 24, was later found at a residence in the 2500 block of A&M Avenue and was arrested. He was booked into the Tom Green County Jail for an accident involving death.

An investigation into the crash is underway.

“When a person has suffered a grave personal injury in an accident due to someone else’s negligence, the most overwhelming emotion they feel is a sense of injustice. They often ask how such a life-altering event could have happened to them,” attorney Joel A. Gordon said. “The next question usually is, who can help me?” Mr. Gordon added.

A legal advocate can represent an injury victim or the family of a deceased victim. The attorney will file a claim on behalf of the victim and will have the responsibility of citing existing codes, laws, or statutes which were violated.
