Zapata County, TX – The Texas Department of Public Safety has identified the work truck passenger who died in a rear-end traffic collision early Wednesday morning on Highway 83 as 44-year-old Jose Martinez of Zapata County. Five other people were injured in the incident.
The deadly collision happened at around 5:30 a.m. on U.S. Highway 83 near mile marker 740.
According to the DPS, a Chevrolet pickup truck was traveling at “a high rate of speed”, failed to stop, and rear-ended a work van that was attempting to turn left into a private ranch for construction work.
Four passengers in the work van and two in the pickup were injured and transported to a hospital in Loredo. Unfortunately, one of the passengers in the pickup truck, later identified as Jose Martinez, succumbed to his injuries.

Zapata County, TX – One person is dead following a fatal traffic collision that occurred Wednesday morning near a private ranch road in Zapata County, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
The collision happened at around 5:30 a.m. on U.S. Highway 83 near mile marker 740.
According to DPS, a white Chevrolet passenger van was stopped on Highway 83, waiting to turn left onto a private ranch road when a white Chevrolet work pickup truck slammed into its rear.
DPS said the driver and passenger of the pickup were taken to a Laredo hospital, where the passenger was declared deceased.
The name of the deceased passenger was not immediately released.
The incident remains under investigation.
