Zavala County, TX – The five people who were killed in a four-vehicle traffic collision involving a Freightliner tractor truck in the icy road conditions in Zavala County Early Tuesday have been identified.

The victims have been identified as Pedro Urquiza, 63, Estanislao Jaimes, 60, Diana Lopez 43, Jose Artemio Rodriguez, 48, and 60-year-old Maria Pineda.

Two Ford vans each towing a trailer, a Ford pickup truck, and a Freightliner tractor truck were involved in the collision.

Authorities said the vans were traveling eastbound on Highway 57 approaching the Nueces River Bridge when one of the vans lost control and crashed into the rear of the other. The Ford pickup truck stopped on the bridge due to the collision.

A Freightliner tractor truck then crashed into the three vehicles.

A total of five people were killed in the collision. Police said Urquiza, Jaimes, and Lopez were in one van.

Rodriguez, who was operating the pickup truck, was found at the bottom of the bridge.

Pineda was driving the other van.

Seven other passengers were injured in the incident.

Zavala County, TX – Five people were killed in a multi-vehicle collision in Zavala County early Tuesday morning due to the icy road conditions, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The incident took place at about 12:45 a.m. on January 21 on Nueces River Bridge along U.S. Highway 57, east of La Pryor.

According to DPS, a Ford van towing a trailer was traveling eastbound on 57 approaching the Bridge when another Ford van also towing a trailer lost control and struck the first van from behind.

The two vans and a Ford pickup truck stopped on the bridge due to the collision. That’s when a Freightliner tractor truck crashed into the three vehicles.

Five people – 3 in one van, one in the other van, and the driver of the pickup truck, were pronounced deceased at the scene following the accident.

Seven other passengers were taken to Uvalde for treatment of their injuries.

The highway was shut down for hours as crews worked to clear the scene.

The DPS is conducting an investigation into the accident.
