Ralls, TX – A man has been charged in connection with the two-vehicle accident that left the Vice President of the Hobbs Municipal Schools Board of Education dead and her husband seriously injured on Tuesday in Ralls, according to the Texas DPS.

Sergio Aviles, 24, of Guerrero, Mexico, was charged with criminally negligent homicide.

The fatal accident happened around 11:30 a.m. on August 5 at the intersection of U.S. 62 and US 82.

DPS said Peggy Appleton, 71, of Hobbs, was driving a 2020 Toyota Tundra eastbound on US 82 approaching the intersection while Aviles was driving a truck tractor southwest on U.S. 62.

Aviles disregarded a stop sign and collided with the driver’s side door of the Tundra. Both vehicles caught on fire.

Appleton was pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband, Terry Appleton, was taken to the University Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

Aviles was uninjured in the accident. He was arrested and charged. He was being held at the Crosby County jail as of Wednesday, August 6.

The DPS is investigating the accident.

Ralls, TX – The Vice President of the Hobbs Municipal Schools Board of Education was killed Tuesday morning in a two-vehicle accident that left her husband seriously injured in Ralls, according to the Texas DPS.

The fatal accident happened around 11:30 a.m. on August 5 on the U.S. Highway 62/82 bypass, east of downtown Lubbock.

DPS said the collision involved a pickup truck and a semi-tractor-trailer.

Peggy Appleton was killed in the accident. Her husband, Terry Appleton, was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

No further details were provided.

The DPS is investigating the accident.
