Beaumont, TX – Two people were killed early Saturday morning in a fiery accident involving an intoxicated driver in Beaumont, according to the police.

The fatal accident happened around 2:50 a.m. on August 9 in the 800 block of Interstate 10 North over Harrison Avenue.

According to the police, Jesus Mario Medina, 29, said he was driving a Chevrolet Colorado when he looked down at his phone. When he looked up, a 2014 Ford passenger car was stopped in the roadway without lights. He could not avoid it and hit it.

Both vehicles caught fire.

Two people in the Ford were pronounced dead at the scene. Two other people were taken a Beaumont hospitals in unknown conditions.

Officers said Medina had a distinct odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath and had glassy eyes. He was booked into the Jefferson County Correctional Facility at 1:19 p.m. on Saturday. His bond was set at $200,000 total, $100,000 for each intoxication manslaughter charge. If he makes bond, he must use an ignition interlock device when driving.

The police are investigating the accident.
