Abdimalik Maigag Killed in DUI Crash on Southwest Freeway in Houston

29-Year-Old Abdimalik Maigag Killed in Houston Two-Vehicle Crash on Southwest Freeway

Houston, Texas (May 6, 2020) – The person who was killed Sunday night in a suspected DUI crash in southwest Houston has been identified as Abdimalik Maigag, 29, according to authorities.

The fatal crash happened around 9:30 p.m. May 3, in the outbound feeder lanes of the Southwest Freeway near Harwin, before the Hillcroft exit.

Authorities said a Honda Accord was exiting the freeway when it was rear-ended by a Cadillac driven by 62-year-old Jose Talamantes. The impact caused the Honda to crash into a pillar, and split in half.

The driver of Accord, Maigag, was ejected, and the Cadillac landed on top of him. Maigag was killed in the crash.

Talamantes attempted to flee, but witnesses followed him, and police took him into custody. He was charged with failure to stop and render aid. He was also charged with felony murder. He could be charged with intoxication manslaughter if it is found that he was intoxicated at the time of the crash.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Maigag’s family with the unexpected loss.

The crash remains under investigation.

We pass our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Abdimalik Maigag.

In Texas, a driver is legally intoxicated after consuming alcohol if their blood alcohol content (BAC) is .08% or higher. A driver is also considered intoxicated if they don’t have the normal use of their mental or physical faculties by reason of the introduction of alcohol. Alcohol, however, is not the only intoxicant, as drivers can become intoxicated by ingesting prescription and illegal drugs such as crack, marijuana, and cocaine.

Regardless of what substance caused the driver’s reaction time to become significantly altered, intoxication by any means can cause terrible accidents and injuries.

Innocent victims harmed by drunk drivers are entitled to compensation for their injuries, including but not limited to medical expenses; lost wages; pain and suffering and mental anguish; physical impairment and disability; and most importantly, punitive damages to deter future conduct. If a death occurred because of a drunk driver, you will want a knowledgeable accident lawyer to bring a wrongful death action against the drunk driver.
