Odessa, Texas – Seven people were injured Friday afternoon after a car crashed into a business in Odessa, according to the Odessa Police Department.

The crash happened around 11:44 a.m., May 10, at an ice cream shop known as Alfredo’s Paleteria on 42nd Street and Bonham Avenue.

Police said 66-year-old Rhonda Thomas, of Odessa, was facing westbound on the street in a 2018 Toyota Highlander and was attempting to make a left turn.

Thomas failed to yield the right of way to an oncoming red Ford Expedition, causing the front end of the Toyota to hit the left rear quarter panel of the Expedition.

Thomas then accelerated rather than braking as she entered the parking lot, and hit a juvenile before crashing through Alfredo’s Paleteria.

Seven people in the business were injured. Four people were transported to Medical Center Hospital for treatment. One of those taken to the hospital is 16-year-old Augusto De Souza, a Permian High School student and soccer player who plays for Savage FC West Texas. A GoFundMe page has been started to help De Souza with his recovery after the accident visit.

No other details were provided.

The police are investigating the crash.

Common Causes of Automobile Accidents

There are many different reasons why automobile, pedestrian, 18-wheeler, bicycle, and motorcycle accidents occur, including driver negligence, driver inattention, texting and driving, speeding, fatigue, failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign, or private drive, running a red light, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. While the factors listed above are the main causes of most accidents, there may also be other factors involved, which is why it’s important that an investigation be conducted before evidence disappears, especially in cases involving a fatality.  At Joel A. Gordon & Associates, we will act quickly to secure accident scene photos, interview witnesses, obtain police records, and secure other valuable evidence needed to win your case.  Call now for a free consultation.
