Deputy Constable Ruben Garcia Killed in Collision Caused by Distracted Driver
Brownsville, TX – A Cameron County Precinct 1 Deputy Constable, identified as Ruben Garcia is dead following a two-vehicle traffic collision on State Highway 48 in Brownsville Monday evening.
According to Texas DPS, the deadly accident around 6:45 p.m. on September 30 on SH-48 near Marine Way Road.
DPS said an initial investigation revealed a Cameron County Precinct 1 patrol unit, occupied by Constable Ruben Garcia, was parked on State Highway 48.
After assisting DPS with another collision scene at the location, Garcia was preparing to leave when a white Chevrolet Silverado rear-ended the patrol unit.
DPS said Constable Garcia was injured and was taken to a hospital in Brownville, where succumbed to his injuries.
According to the DPS, the driver of the Chevrolet admitted to being distracted while looking at his phone and driving.
The driver was suspected of driving while intoxicated at the time of the collision.
No additional details were provided.
The incident remains under investigation.
