DPS said the deadly accident happened just after 1 p.m. on Friday, August 23, and involved a passenger car and a Ford F-150 pickup truck.

Zapata, TX – Three people are dead after a two-vehicle traffic collision on State Highway 16 at the Zapata and Jim Hogg County Line, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS).

DPS said the deadly accident happened just after 1 p.m. on Friday, August 23, and involved a passenger car and a Ford F-150 pickup truck.

According to the DPS, the passenger car was traveling eastbound on State Highway 16 while the pickup truck was traveling westbound. At some point, one of the vehicles crossed to the opposite lane and the two vehicles collided head-on.

The passenger car caught fire following the collision. The car’s driver and passenger died at the scene.

The driver of the pickup and two passengers, including an infant, were taken to the hospital where the driver later died.

Infant Critically Injured in Zapata Accident; Three People Killed

The passenger and the infant were hospitalized in critical but stable condition.

DPS confirms one of the vehicles caught on fire due to the impact.

A passenger and a baby inside the pickup truck were taken to a hospital in critical condition.

The identities of the victims have been withheld pending notification to the family.

Highway 16 was closed for several hours as deputies investigated the incident, according to Zapata County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident remains under investigation.
