Ernesto Rios Arrested in Hit-and-Run on East Saunders in Laredo

Laredo, Texas – A man has been arrested in connection to the hit-and-run accident that left a woman in a wheelchair dead last Sunday in Laredo, according to the Laredo Police Department.

Ernesto Cortes Rios was arrested in connection to the death of Maribel Zavala, 44.

The deadly accident happened around 5:00 a.m., May 5, in the 210 block of East Saunders.

Police said Zavala, was crossing the street when she was struck by a vehicle.

The vehicle fled the scene after the accident.

Zavala was taken to the hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

Rios was arrested on Thursday, May 9. He allegedly confessed to driving the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run. He has been charged with an accident involving death.

No other information was available.

The police are investigating the crash.
