Beatrice Gonzales Killed in San Antonio Bicycle Crash on North St. Mary’s Street

San Antonio, Texas (April 9, 2021) – A bicyclist was fatally struck by a vehicle Wednesday evening in San Antonio, according to police.

The deadly accident happened around 7:00 p.m., on April 7, in the 1400 block of North St. Mary’s Street near Central Catholic High School.

Police said a driver jumped a curb at a high rate of speed and struck Beatrice Gonzales as she waited on the curb for her bicyclist group, who were riding southbound.

Gonzales was pronounced dead at the scene. She was a member of the Beers and Gears Cycling Crews San Antonio cycling club.

The driver of the vehicle, Samantha Leigh Castillo, 24, was arrested and has been charged with intoxication manslaughter. Her bond has been set at $50,000.

An investigation is underway.

With the surge in popularity of alternate transportation to save on fuel costs, bicycling has emerged as a new form of mobility forced to compete with motorized traffic in dangerous situations. This has resulted in many more accidents between human-powered vehicles and powerful engine-driven machines, producing tragic injuries as well as countless fatalities.
