Rusk County, Texas (January 19, 2021) – Two people were killed in a fiery two-vehicle crash Saturday night in Rusk County, according to the Texas DPS.

According to a preliminary investigation, a Chevrolet SUV was traveling southbound on the highway while a Mazda SUV was traveling northbound.

For unknown reasons, the Chevrolet veered to the left into oncoming traffic, overcorrected to the right, and then again back to the left. The vehicle went into a side-skid into the northbound lane and collided with the Mazda.

The impact caused the Mazda to catch fire.

The Chevrolet driver, Benjamin Slaughter Jr., 33, of Longview, was pronounced at the scene.

The Mazda driver, Kristen Charnell Herron, 26, of Pittsburg, was also pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.

Common Causes of Automobile Accidents

While there are many causes of car accidents, the most common reasons of driver negligence include driver inattention; cell phone use; texting and driving; speeding; fatigue; failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign or private drive; running a red light; and driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs,” Attorney Joel A. Gordon said. Mr. Gordon believes that an independent investigation is important. An Attorney will help obtain the crash report, secure accident photos, interview witnesses, and create a claim.
