Brycton Hughey Injured in Fatal Head-On Crash on Highway 87 in Newton County

Brycton Hughey ID’d as Kirbyville Man Injured in Newton County Car Accident on Highway 87

Newton County, Texas (July 14, 2019) – Brycton Hughey, 24, of Kirbyville, has been identified as the man who was injured early Saturday morning in a fiery head-on crash that also left one person dead in Newton County.

The deadly accident took place at around 2:45 a.m. Saturday, July 13 on Highway 87, just north of the Bleakwood community.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Hughey was driving a 2012 Chevrolet pickup truck northbound on Highway 87 when he allowed his vehicle to cross the center line and collided head-on with a 1996 Chevrolet sedan that was traveling southbound.

The Chevrolet sedan then burst into flames.

Hughey sustained major injuries and was taken to Christus St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Beaumont.

The driver of the sedan was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The name of the victim has not been disclosed pending notification of family.

DPS is investigating the cause of the accident.
