Carlos Lechuga Killed and Hector Mendoza Injured in El Paso Chain-Reaction Crash on I-10 West

El Paso, Texas (December 14, 2019) – One person was killed, and another was injured in a chain-reaction crash that happened Monday night in far East El Paso, according to the police.

The deadly crash happened around 10:00 p.m. December 9, on the I-10 West.

Police said Martin Castaneda, 24, was weaving in and out of traffic before hitting a stalled tractor-trailer, pushing it into a parked GMC truck. The impact caused the GMC to hit Carlos Lechuga, 35, and Hector Mendoza, 33, who had stopped to help the driver of the stalled vehicle.

Lechuga and Mendoza were rushed to the hospital where Lechuga died on Wednesday morning. Mendoza was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Castaneda was booked into the El Paso County jail on a $200,000 bond for an intoxicated manslaughter charge and $150,000 bond for the assault charge.

An investigation into the crash is underway.
