Chaz Joubert Killed, Girl Injured in Houston Crash at Southwest Freeway and Beltway 8; Yasmir Reyes Charged

Houston, Texas (June 13, 2022) – An innocent driver was killed and a 16-year-old girl was injured after a brief police pursuit ended in a crash early Monday morning in southwest Houston, according to Houston police.

The crash happened at around 1:00 a.m., June 13, at the intersection of the Southwest Freeway feeder road and the Sam Houston Tollway.

The incident began in a nearby parking lot after police saw a Ford Mustang doing donuts. As the officers approached the vehicle in the parking lot of Hornwood, the driver fled and a pursuit ensued.

About four minutes later, the chase ended when the Mustang collided with a Chevy Malibu, a ride-share vehicle, at the intersection of the Southwest Freeway and Beltway 8 feeder roads. The driver of the Mustang allegedly ran a red light.

The driver of the Chevy, 27-year-old Chaz Elias Joubert, was pronounced dead at the scene.  A passenger in the Chevy, a 16-year-old girl, was transported to a hospital in serious condition.

The driver of the Mustang, Yasmir Reyes,28, sustained a broken leg in the crash. He has been charged with murder and reckless assault.

Further information about the accident was not provided.

An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
