Henderson County, Texas (June 25, 2022) – Authorities have identified the man who was killed in a two-vehicle collision Friday morning in Henderson County.

Christopher Spencer, 61, died in the crash that happened at about 10:15 a.m. Friday, June 24, at the intersection of FM 753 and FM 59. The area is about 4.4 miles southwest of Athens.

According to the Texas of Department Public Safety, Spencer, a Tyler resident, was driving a van westbound on FM 753, approaching the intersection of the two Farm to Market roads when he failed to yield right of way at a stop sign.

Spencer’s van was then hit on the right side by a Freightliner truck tractor towing a 1997 Lufkin dump semi-trailer southbound on FM 59.

After the impact, the two vehicles veered off the road into the west ditch and crashed through a barbed wire fence. Both vehicles then came to rest in a pasture.

Spencer was declared dead at the scene. His body was transported to Hannigan Smith Funeral Home in Athens.

Spencer’s passenger, Robin Sphaler, 67, of Teague, sustained life-threatening injuries and was taken to UT Health Tyler Hospital.

The driver of the Freightliner, Felix Rojas, 46, of Murchison, was examined by paramedics and released at the scene.

Further details regarding the collision were immediately provided.

The accident remains under investigation.

Common Causes of Automobile Accidents

There are many different reasons why automobile, 18-wheeler, and motorcycle accidents occur, including driver negligence, driver inattention, texting and driving, speeding, fatigue, failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign or private drive, running a red light, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. While the factors listed above are the main causes of most accidents, there may also be other factors involved, which is why it’s important that an investigation be conducted before evidence disappears, especially in cases involving a fatality.  At Joel A. Gordon & Associates, we will act quickly to secure accident scene photos, interview witnesses, obtain police records, and secure other valuable evidence needed to win your case.  Call now for a free consultation.
