Don Bassett Arrested in Fatal Odessa Two-Vehicle Crash on Highway 191

Odessa, Texas (July 21, 2022) – According to the police, a 79-year-old man was arrested earlier this week following a two-vehicle crash that happened earlier this month in Odessa.

The fatal crash happened around 6:07 p.m., July 7, in the 12800 block of E Highway 191.

Authorities said a beige 2006 Chevrolet Avalanche failed to control its speed and rear-ended a 2003 Mercedes that was traveling eastbound in the inside lane.

Both vehicles left the roadway and hit the retaining barrier after the collision.

The Mercedes driver, Hortensia Almaras, 42, of Midland, was taken to Medical Center Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The passenger in the Mercedes, 90-year-old Louise Munoz of Midland, was taken to a local hospital for treatment.

The Avalanche driver, 79-year-old Don Allison Bassett, was arrested on July 19 and was charged with Manslaughter. He was driving 83 miles per hour in a 60-mile-per-hour construction zone and hit the Mercedes without braking. He was later released on a $25,000 bond.

The crash remains under investigation.

Common Causes of Automobile Accidents

There are many different reasons why automobile, 18-wheeler, and motorcycle accidents occur, including driver negligence, driver inattention, texting and driving, speeding, fatigue, failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign or private drive, running a red light, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. While the factors listed above are the main causes of most accidents, there may also be other factors involved, which is why it’s important that an investigation be conducted before evidence disappears, especially in cases involving a fatality.  At Joel A. Gordon & Associates, we will act quickly to secure accident scene photos, interview witnesses, obtain police records, and secure other valuable evidence needed to win your case.  Call now for a free consultation.
