Dustin Garcia Killed in Hawley Two-Vehicle Crash on Highway 277

Hawley, Texas (March 3, 2021) – A man was killed Tuesday morning in a two-vehicle crash in Hawley, according to police.

The fatal crash occurred around 6:30 a.m., March 2, on Highway 277, north of the clear fork of the Brazos River Bridge.

Police said Dustin Garcia, 40, of Abilene, was driving a 2005 Toyota Scion when he ran over a mattress lying in the outside lane of traffic. He lost control of the vehicle, crossed over the inside lane, hit a guardrail, spun around multiple times, and stopped in the middle of the roadway, facing eastbound.

The driver of a southbound 2012 Volvo Combination Tractor did not see the Scion on the roadway because of the dust lifted by the spin-out and hit it.

Garcia was killed in the crash.

The Volvo driver sustained minor injuries in the crash.

According to a witness, they saw the mattress fly out of the back of a possibly brown crew cab pickup that also had a white appliance (washer, dryer, etc.) but thought the pickup was slowing down to go back and pick it up.

The owner of the mattress could be charged with Failure to Secure Cargo, causing death.

The police are investigating the crash. Anyone with any information about the brown pickup is asked to call the Hawley Police Department at 325-537-9311.” said the Hawley Police Department.

Common Causes of Automobile Accidents

While there are many causes of car accidents, the most common reasons of driver negligence include driver inattention; cell phone use; texting and driving; speeding; fatigue; failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign or private drive; running a red light; and driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs,” Attorney Joel A. Gordon said. Mr. Gordon believes that an independent investigation is important. An Attorney will help obtain the crash report, secure accident photos, interview witnesses, and create a claim.
