Edward Hykel Killed in Crash on Interstate 10 in West

Edward Hykel ID’d as Firefighter Killed in West Pedestrian Accident on Interstate 10 near Tokio Road

West, Texas (April 1, 2023) – The West Volunteer Fire Department has identified the firefighter who died after being struck by a vehicle on Tuesday afternoon in West as Edward “Eddie” Hykel, 60.

The deadly crash happened at around 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 28, on Interstate 10 near Tokio Road.

DPS Troopers were providing traffic control along with the West Fire Department for a vehicle that had caught fire on Interstate-35N near mile marker 354. The inside lane was blocked with traffic control devices, a fire truck, and two DPS patrol units.

The driver of a Peterbilt truck tractor semi-trailer traveling on the inside lane disregarded the traffic control devices and hit Hykel, the fire truck, and two patrol units.

Hykel was taken to Baylor Scott and White, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The two troopers were also transported to the Baylor Scott and White to be treated for their injuries.

Further details regarding the collision were immediately provided.

The crash remains under investigation.
