Herrera Torres and Hector Rios Jr. ID’d as 2 Victims Killed in Yoakum Crash on State Highway 111

Yoakum, Texas (November 24, 2022) – Authorities have identified the two people who were killed early Tuesday morning in a head-on collision near Yoakum.

Herrera Torres, 19, and Hector Javier Rios Jr., 18, both from El Campo, died in the crash that happened at about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 22 on State Highway 111, just west of Yoakum.

According to the authorities, Herrera was driving a 2016 Hyundai Elantra on State Highway 111 when, for unknown reasons, he allowed the vehicle to cross the center median on the highway.

Herrera’s vehicle ultimately collided head-on with a 2021 Dodge Ram, driven by Roberto Garcia Mata Jr., 51, of Smiley.

After the crash, the Elantra rolled upright into a grassy ditch and the Dodge overturned and landed on its roof, facing eastbound in the westbound lane.

Herrera and his passenger, Rios Jr., were pronounced dead at the scene at around 6:16 a.m. Mata was taken to DeTar Hospital Navarro with non-life threatening injuries.

No additional information about the accident was provided.

An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
