Howard Petrea ID’d as Man Killed in Mineola Crash on U.S. 80 and FM 1253

Smith County, Texas (January 24, 2023) – The man who died in a two-vehicle crash Friday morning east of Mineola in Smith County has been identified as Howard W. Petrea, 89, of Mineola.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the deadly crash occurred at the intersection of U.S. 80 and FM 1253, five miles east of Mineola, on Friday, January 20.

DPS said a vehicle, driven by Petrea, was stopped at a stop sign at the intersection of U.S. 80 and FM 1253 while a car, Terrance Boyd, 23, was heading eastbound on U.S. 80.

Petrea failed to yield the right of way to Boyd’s vehicle, which caused Terrance Boyd’s vehicle to strike Petrea’s vehicle.

Petrea died at the scene, while his passengers were taken to a Tyler hospital with unspecified injuries.

Boyd was also taken to a Tyler hospital in unknown condition.

Further details regarding the collision were immediately provided.

The crash remains under investigation.
