HPD Police Officer Injured in Houston Pedestrian Accident at Emancipation and Jefferson; Derek Hall Charged

Houston, Texas (June 2, 2020) – A man has been charged after he struck an HPD officer with his car Saturday night in Houston, police said.

The accident occurred around 9:35 p.m. May 30, at the intersection of Emancipation Avenue and Jefferson Street.

Police said Derek Hall, 40, of Houston, confronted a group of people who were taking a video at a parking lot at the intersection. He wielded a table leg with a large nail in it and hit someone in the head with it. He also bashed the windows on one of their cars.

A nearby group of Houston police officers, who were on standby to work a downtown protest, saw the incident and ran over to help.

Hall got in his vehicle and hit one of the officers as he fled the scene. The impact threw the officer at least six feet, and she was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Hall was arrested and has been charged with four counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, one count of aggravated assault of a public servant, and another count of possession of a controlled substance. He is being held up in the county lockup in lieu of posting combined $200,000 in bail.

An investigation is ongoing.

We wish the injured victim a quick recovery.

“When a person has suffered a personal injury in an accident due to someone else’s negligence, the most overwhelming emotion they feel is a sense of injustice. They often ask how such a life-altering event could have happened to them,” attorney Joel A. Gordon said. “The next question usually is, who can help me?” Mr. Gordon added.

A legal advocate can represent an injury victim or the family of a deceased victim. The attorney will file a claim on behalf of the victim and will have the responsibility of citing existing codes, laws, or statues which were violated.
