James Flanagan Killed in Multi-Vehicle Crash on Highway 271 in Upshur County

James Flanagan ID’d as Man Killed in Upshur County Crash on Highway 271

Upshur County, Texas (October 31, 2022) – The man who died on Friday in a traffic accident in Upshur County has been identified as James R. Flanagan, 85, of Longview.

The deadly crash happened on U.S. Highway 271, approximately four miles north of Gilmer.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Rafael Flores, 42, of Tyler, was driving a 2021 Kenworth trailer southbound on Highway 271 while Joshua J. Harms, 44, of El Paso, was driving a Ford Taurus northbound.

A GMC pickup stopped on the shoulder of the highway and attempted to make a U-turn illegally. In the process, the GMC pickup was hit by the trailer. The GMC truck also collided with the Taurus and a 2019 Western Star trailer that was parked.

Flanagan died in the crash. Flores and Harms were not injured.

Further details regarding the collision were immediately provided.

The accident remains under investigation.
