Jessica Helmers Killed in Lubbock Two-Vehicle Crash on Marsha Sharp Freeway at University Avenue

Lubbock, Texas (January 18, 2021) – One person was killed, and another was injured Saturday morning in a two-vehicle crash in Lubbock, according to authorities.

The fatal crash happened around 2:15 a.m., January 14, at the intersection of Marsha Sharp Freeway and University Avenue.

Police said Gabriel Zerrata, 30, was driving an SUV northbound in the 400 block of University Avenue while Jessica Helmers, 19, was driving a passenger car eastbound in the 2500 block of Marsha Sharp Freeway along the eastbound access road. The vehicles then collided at the intersection.

Helmers was pronounced dead at the scene.

Zerrata was taken to University Medical Center with moderate injuries.

The Major Crash Investigation Unit is investigating the crash.
