Lubbock, Texas (May 17, 2022) – Authorities have identified the man who died early Monday morning following a wrong-way crash in Lubbock as Jimmy Lopez, 29.

At around 12:10 a.m. Monday, May 16, officers responded to reports of a vehicle traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes on Marsha Sharp Freeway near Upland Avenue, Lubbock Police Department said.

An off-duty officer saw the vehicle and turned on his lights and sirens to try to get the attention of the wrong-way driver, now identified as Lopez.

The officer notified dispatch at around 12:14 a.m. and exited at West Loop 289 and re-entered Marsha Sharp Freeway in the eastbound lanes of traffic to try to pull the vehicle, but Lopez continued to drive eastbound.

At about 12:21 a.m. Lopez’s vehicle collided with an SUV that was traveling westbound in the 100 block of Parkway Drive, near Joyland.

Lopez, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.

Common Causes of Automobile Accidents

There are many different reasons why automobile, 18-wheeler, and motorcycle accidents occur, including driver negligence, driver inattention, texting and driving, speeding, fatigue, failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign or private drive, running a red light, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. While the factors listed above are the main causes of most accidents, there may also be other factors involved, which is why it’s important that an investigation be conducted before evidence disappears, especially in cases involving a fatality.  At Joel A. Gordon & Associates, we will act quickly to secure accident scene photos, interview witnesses, obtain police records, and secure other valuable evidence needed to win your case.  Call now for a free consultation.
