Katelyn Freeman Killed in 2-Vehicle Crash at FM 1046 and U.S. 83 in Wheeler County

Katelyn Freeman Killed, Gavin Whitten Seriously Injured in Wheeler County Crash at FM 1046 and U.S. 83

Wheeler County, Texas (October 5, 2019) – One person was killed, and another was injured in a two-vehicle crash Wednesday evening in Wheeler County, according to DPS.

The crash happened at about 5:06 p.m. on October 2, in the area of Farm-to-Market Road 1046 and U.S. 83.

DPS said Gavin Whitten, 20, of Reydon, Oklahoma, was driving a 2005 Ford Taurus on FM 1046 when he ran a stop sign and crashed into a 2008 Ford F-250, which was heading northbound on U.S. 83.

The impact caused both vehicles to enter into a nearby barrow ditch.

Whitten was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. His passenger, 17-year-old Katelyn Freeman, of Cheyenne, Oklahoma, was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries where she later died. She was not wearing a seat belt.

The DPS is investigating the crash.
