Rusk County, Texas (January 19, 2021) – Two people were killed in a fiery two-vehicle crash Saturday night in Rusk County, according to the Texas DPS.

The fatal crash happened around 8:40 p.m., January 16, on State Loop 571, just east of Henderson.

According to a preliminary investigation, a Chevrolet SUV was traveling southbound on the highway while a Mazda SUV was traveling northbound.

For unknown reasons, the Chevrolet veered to the left into oncoming traffic, overcorrected to the right, and then again back to the left. The vehicle went into a side-skid into the northbound lane where it collided with the Mazda.

The impact caused the Mazda to catch fire.

The Chevrolet driver, Benjamin Slaughter Jr., 33, of Longview, was pronounced at the scene.

The Mazda driver, Kristen Charnell Herron, 26, of Pittsburg, was also pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation.

“When a person has suffered a grave personal injury in an accident due to someone else’s negligence, the most overwhelming emotion they feel is a sense of injustice. They often ask how such a life-altering event could have happened to them,” attorney Joel A. Gordon said. “The next question usually is, who can help me?” Mr. Gordon added.

A legal advocate can represent an injury victim or the family of a deceased victim. The attorney will file a claim on behalf of the victim and will have the responsibility of citing existing codes, laws, or statutes which were violated.
