8-Year-Old Maria Leaha Gonzalez Killed, Elia De La Cruz Injured in Rio Grande City Two-Vehicle Crash on U.S. Highway 83

Rio Grande City, Texas (February 10, 2020) – An 8-year-old girl was killed, and a 34-year-old woman was injured in a rear-end collision early Saturday morning in Rio Grande City, according to the police.

The fatal crash happened around 3:30 a.m. February 8, on U.S. Highway 83.

Authorities said Elia De La Cruz, 34, was driving a black Nissan SUV when she rear-ended a garbage truck.

Cruz and her passenger, 8-year-old as Maria Leaha Gonzalez, were taken to Starr County Memorial Hospital, where Gonzalez later died. Both victims were not wearing seat belts.

Officials said alcohol was not a factor in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.
