Mitchell Rector Killed in Mesquite Two-Vehicle Crash on Interstate 635; Elias Luevano-Gonzalez Arrested

Mesquite, Texas (October 19, 2021) – An off-duty police officer was killed early Monday morning in a two-vehicle crash in Mesquite, according to the police.

The fatal crash happened around 1:36 a.m., October 18, in the 21400 block of southbound Interstate 635.

Police said Elias Luevano-Gonzalez, 21, was driving a 2015 Infiniti Q50 when he crashed into a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu driven by Mitchell Rector, 36, of Buffalo, Texas.

Rector was killed in the crash. He was an off-duty Oakwood, Texas, police officer and was working in a construction area of the highway at the time of the crash.

Luevano-Gonzalez was injured in the crash and is expected to be OK. He was arrested and is facing a charge of intoxication manslaughter. 

The Mesquite Police Department Traffic Division is investigating the crash.
