Officer Ruben Munoz Critically Injured in Sugar Land Multi-Vehicle Crash on U.S. 59; Julian Requena Arrested

Sugar Land DWI Crash, Texas (April 4, 2022) – A police officer was injured Saturday night in a crash involving an alleged drunk driver in Sugar Land, according to the police.

The crash happened around 2:00 a.m., April 2, on U.S. 59 South.

Police said a vehicle hit some debris, lost control, and crashed into the inside walls. Officer Ruben Munoz responded to the scene and used his patrol car to block the scene.

Munoz stepped outside of his vehicle to conduct a sobriety test. He then went back inside his patrol car, which was parked in the emergency lane, and a pickup truck crashed into it.

A wrecker driver called about 15 minutes later and said that an officer had been hit by another car on the highway.

Officer Daniel Barbarick and Officer Demarcus Mitchell responded to the scene, and with the help of witnesses, they were able to get Munoz out of his patrol vehicle. Moments later, another car hit Munoz’s patrol vehicle.

Munoz was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition.

A GoFundMe has been created to help with Munoz’s recovery costs.

The pickup truck driver, 25-year-old Julian Requena, admitted to having been drinking. He was arrested and has been charged with two counts of intoxication assault.

Police believe alcohol could be a factor for all three civilian drivers involved.

The police are investigating the crash.

Common Causes of Automobile Accidents

There are many different reasons why automobile, 18-wheeler, and motorcycle accidents occur, including driver negligence, driver inattention, texting and driving, speeding, fatigue, failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign or private drive, running a red light, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. While the factors listed above are the main causes of most accidents, there may also be other factors involved, which is why it’s important that an investigation be conducted before evidence disappears, especially in cases involving a fatality.  At Joel A. Gordon & Associates, we will act quickly to secure accident scene photos, interview witnesses, obtain police records, and secure other valuable evidence needed to win your case.  Call now for a free consultation.
