Rachel Martinez ID’d as Woman Killed in Castro County Crash on U.S. 60 at FM 1057

Castro County, Texas (April 14, 2022) – The woman who was killed early Thursday morning in a two-vehicle crash in Castro County has been identified as Rachel Martinez, 39, of Hereford, according to a press release by the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The deadly crash happened at around 6:30 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. 60 and FM 1057.

As per the release, a 2020 Kenworth Truck tractor, which was hauling a semi-trailer, was heading westbound on U.S. 60 and had entered into the left turning lane in preparation to turn left onto FM 1057. At the same time, Martinez was driving a 2016 Chevrolet Malibu westbound on U.S. 60 in the inside lane.

The semi-truck stopped in the left turning lane and waited for a train to clear the intersection with FM 1057. The Malibu reportedly failed to move in a single lane, and Martinez was unable to control speed.

The Malibu entered the left turn lane and hit the back right of the semi-truck. Due to the impact, the Malibu rotated counter-clockwise and came to a stop in the center of westbound U.S. 60, facing northbound. The semi-truck came to rest partially in the crossover and the left turn lane, facing west.

Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene. Medeles was transported to Hereford Regional Medical Center, where she was treated for her injuries and released.

The two drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident. The road conditions were dry and clear and the posted speed limit was 75 mph.

The Texas Highway Patrol Troopers are investigating the crash.

Common Causes of Automobile Accidents

There are many different reasons why automobile, 18-wheeler, and motorcycle accidents occur, including driver negligence, driver inattention, texting and driving, speeding, fatigue, failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign or private drive, running a red light, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. While the factors listed above are the main causes of most accidents, there may also be other factors involved, which is why it’s important that an investigation be conducted before evidence disappears, especially in cases involving a fatality.  At Joel A. Gordon & Associates, we will act quickly to secure accident scene photos, interview witnesses, obtain police records, and secure other valuable evidence needed to win your case.  Call now for a free consultation.
