Freestone County, Texas (August 18, 2020) – According to a local news source, a pedestrian was killed Tuesday morning in a 5-vehicle crash in Freestone County, northwest of Oakwood.

The deadly accident happened at about 6:15 a.m., on US-79 near FM-325.

According to the report, a Peterbilt truck tractor semi-trailer was heading southbound when it attempted to pass a Volkswagen Jetta. As the Peterbilt was passing, it crashed into the Jetta. The impact caused both vehicles to leave the roadway, and an approaching Freightliner truck tractor hit the trailer that was still in the southbound lane.

The Freightliner jackknifed into the northbound lane where it struck Rene Ochoa Jr., 23, of Palestine, who was assisting the driver of the Volkswagen and the Peterbilt.

As the Freightliner jackknifed across the northbound lanes, it was struck by a northbound jaguar passenger car. A southbound Chrysler 300 also struck the Freightliner.

Two people sustained critical injuries in the crash. Three other people also sustained possible injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
