Robert William Burns Killed, Jennifer Lea Burns Injured in Gregg County Motorcycle Crash on FM 2087 and FM 2011

Gregg County, Texas (March 4, 2021) – A man was killed, and a woman was injured Wednesday afternoon in a motorcycle crash in Gregg County, according to the Texas DPS.

The fatal crash happened around 4:40 p.m., March 3, at the intersection of FM 2087 and FM 2011, about two miles north of Kilgore.

DPS said a 2003 Ford F-150 was traveling southbound on FM 2087 and was preparing to turn eastbound onto FM 2011 while a 2018 Harley Davidson Road King motorcycle was traveling northbound on FM 2087.

The Ford driver attempted to turn left onto FM 2011, but it failed to yield the right of way to the motorcycle, possibly due to impaired visibility caused by the sun. The motorcycle then struck the Ford, ejecting the motorcycle rider and his passenger.

The rider, Robert William Burns, 41, of Kilgore, was pronounced dead at the scene. His passenger, Jennifer Lea Burns, 42, of Kilgore, was taken to Christus Trinity Mother Frances Hospital – Tyler in serious condition.

The Ford driver, Travis Nathan Mobbs, 79, of Longview, was uninjured in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.

Most motorcycle crashes are caused by negligent drivers who don’t keep a proper lookout or fail to yield the right-of-way. Because motorcyclists are vulnerable, their injuries are usually severe, often suffering from road rash, broken bones, brain injuries, amputations, or spinal cord injuries. In some cases, the accident results in death.
