Rodney Godbey Killed, John Stewart, Marcus Counts, and Jessica Otto Injured in Wood County Two-Vehicle Crash on US-80 at FM 1799

Wood County, Texas (December 2, 2021) – One person was killed, and three others were injured on Monday in a two-vehicle crash in Wood County, according to the Texas DPS.

The fatal crash happened on November 29, at the intersection of US-80 and FM 1799, 2.4 miles west of Mineola.

DPS said a 2010 Nissan Altima was traveling southbound on FM 1799 and was stopped at the intersection while a 2019 Dodge Challenger was traveling westbound on US-80.

The Nissan failed to yield the right of way to the Dodge and traveled into its path, resulting in a collision.

The Nissan driver, Rodney Godbey, 53, of Mesquite, was airlifted to UT-Health East Texas, where he later died. His passenger, John Stewart, 53, of Terrell, sustained non-life-threatening injuries but was not taken to the hospital.

The Dodge driver, Marcus Counts, 25, of Jefferson, and his passenger, Jessica Otto, 30, of Quitman, were taken to UT-Health East Texas – Quitman in stable condition.

The crash remains under investigation.
