Sherwood Wagner ID’d as Pedestrian Killed in Newton County Crash on Highway 62

Newton County, Texas (April 22, 2022) – Authorities have identified the pedestrian who died after being struck by a pickup Thursday night in Newton County as Sherwood Wagner, 60, of Orange.

The deadly accident happened around 8:30 p.m. Thursday, April 21, on Highway 62, just south of the Jasper County line.

According to a press release by the Texas Department of Public Safety, Wagner was walking in the center of the road along Highway 62 when a northbound 2018 Toyota pickup hit him.

Wagner was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the pickup, identified as a 43-year-old Call man, was unhurt.

Further details regarding the crash were not immediately provided.

An investigation is underway.
