Smith County Deputies Killed, 2 Injured in Tyler Crash on Frankston Highway near West Grande Boulevard

Tyler, Texas (July 29, 2022) – A Smith County deputy was killed and two other people were injured in a multi-vehicle collision early Friday morning in Tyler, according to authorities.

The incident began at about 11:50 p.m. Thursday, when two Smith County deputies were on patrol in the 14000 block of State Highway 155 South and had pulled over a vehicle.

The two officers had placed both occupants of the vehicle into the back of the patrol car. One deputy was in the front passenger seat operating the onboard computer and radio while the other deputy was behind the unit.

At around 12:50 a.m., a 2017 full-size Mercedes Benz crashed into the patrol unit in the northbound lanes of Frankston Highway, approximately a mile south of West Grande Boulevard.

The deputy who was in the front passenger seat sustained head injuries and was transported to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The second deputy and one of the detained individuals in the patrol unit were also injured.

The driver of the Mercedes, Daniel Nyabuto, was arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter. His bail was set at $750,000.

A passenger in the Mercedes was also charged with public intoxication.

No other details were available.

An investigation into the crash is underway.
