Tina Hunley Killed, William Hunley and 11-Year-Old Girl Injured in Sherman County Two-Vehicle Crash on US 287 near Stratford

Sherman County, Texas (March 31, 2022) – One person was killed, and two others were injured Tuesday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash in Sherman County, according to the Texas DPS.

The fatal crash happened around 2:45 p.m., March 29, on US 287, about three miles south of Stratford.

DPS said a 2007 GMC Yukon towing a Yacht Club boat trailer was parked on the improved southbound shoulder of the highway while a 2008 Peterbilt Truck tractor towing a semi-trailer was traveling southbound.

The driver of the semi-trailer, Richard Sumpter, 68, of Fowler, Colorado, saw the Yukon on the shoulder and merged into the inside lane.

The driver of the Yukon, Tina Hunley, 46, of Fort Lupton, Colorado, left the improved shoulder and traveled back onto the roadway to make a left turn at a nearby turnaround. She made an unsafe turn and turned into the path of the semi-trailer. The semi-trailer then struck the driver’s side of the Yukon.

The impact caused the semi-trailer to roll onto its side.

Hunley was taken to a Dumas hospital, where she later died.

One of the two passengers in the Yukon, William Hunley, 45, of Fort Lupton, Colorado, was treated and released at the scene. The other passenger, an 11-year-old girl, also of Fort Lupton, Colorado, was taken to the Dumas hospital with serious injuries.

All three occupants of the Yukon were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash.

Sumpter was uninjured in the crash. He was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.

The road conditions were dry with high winds at the time of the crash.

The Texas Highway Patrol Troopers are investigating the crash.

Common Causes of Automobile Accidents

There are many different reasons why automobile, 18-wheeler, and motorcycle accidents occur, including driver negligence, driver inattention, texting and driving, speeding, fatigue, failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign or private drive, running a red light, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. While the factors listed above are the main causes of most accidents, there may also be other factors involved, which is why it’s important that an investigation be conducted before evidence disappears, especially in cases involving a fatality.  At Joel A. Gordon & Associates, we will act quickly to secure accident scene photos, interview witnesses, obtain police records, and secure other valuable evidence needed to win your case.  Call now for a free consultation.
