Utility Worker Hit, Killed by Car on FM 90 in Mabank; Chandler Martin Mitchell Arrested

Roadside Utility Worker Killed in Mabank Pedestrian Accident on FM 90; Chandler Martin Mitchell Arrested

Mabank, Texas (March 29, 2020) – A man has been arrested and charged after he fatally hit a roadside utility worker earlier this month in Mabank, police said.

The deadly accident happened around 9:30 a.m. March 13, in the 18000 block of FM 90.

Mabank police said 32-year-old Chandler Martin Mitchell was driving a Chevrolet pickup truck when he struck a roadside utility worker. The worker was outside their work-style Chevrolet Colorado with several caution lights activated including blue, white, and amber lights, and visible yellow warning labels on the vehicle’s tailgate. 

The victim was taken to a Gun Barrel City hospital where they were pronounced dead. The victim’s identity has not been released.

Information recovered from Mitchell’s vehicle stated that he was driving at 66 mph, seconds before hitting the worker. He did not attempt to activate the brakes until he struck the victim.

Mitchell was arrested on March 27 and was charged with manslaughter. He was taken to the Kaufman County Jail where he is being held on a $350,000 bond.

An investigation into the crash is underway.
