Amarillo, Texas (May 1, 2023) – The person who died in a traffic accident early Sunday morning near Amarillo has been identified as 22-year-old Wiliam Gray.

The deadly accident happened at around 5:35 a.m. on Sunday, April 30, on U.S. 287.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said Gray was driving a 2007 Kia Spectra in the wrong way in the southeast lane on U.S. 287 when the Kia struck a 2010 Freightliner Truck tractor towing a semi-trailer that was traveling southeast on U.S. 287.

After the impact, the Kia veered into the center median and overturned. The semi drifted across the center median and onto the northwest-bound lane, where it flipped onto its side and burst into flames.

Gray was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the semi, 54-year-old Deandre Cooper of Fort Worth, was transported to Amarillo Northwest Texas Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the crash.

Common Causes of Automobile Accidents

There are many different reasons why automobile, pedestrian, 18-wheeler, and motorcycle accidents occur, including driver negligence, driver inattention, texting and driving, speeding, fatigue, failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign, or private drive, running a red light, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. While the factors listed above are the main causes of most accidents, there may also be other factors involved, which is why it’s important that an investigation be conducted before evidence disappears, especially in cases involving a fatality.  At Joel A. Gordon & Associates, we will act quickly to secure accident scene photos, interview witnesses, obtain police records, and secure other valuable evidence needed to win your case.  Call now for a free consultation.
