Yavonne Mayes Killed, Chelby Venters and Val Ospino Injured in Port Arthur Two-Vehicle Crash on Highway 73

Port Arthur, Texas (March 28, 2022) – One person was killed, and two others were injured Sunday morning in a two-vehicle crash in Port Arthur, according to the authorities.

The fatal crash happened just after 10:30 a.m., March 27, in the eastbound lanes of Highway 73 near the Veolia North America Treatment Complex.

Authorities said a 2007 Peterbilt truck tractor semi-trailer was traveling eastbound on the highway while a 2012 Chrysler passenger car was traveling behind the Peterbilt.

Traffic slowed due to a wide load that was in front of both vehicles.

The Chrysler failed to control its speed and rear-ended the Peterbilt.

The Chrysler driver, Chelby Venters of Katy, was taken to CHRISTUS St. Elizabeth for treatment. One passenger in the Chrysler, Val Ospino, 20, of Columbia, was taken to CHRISTUS St. Elizabeth for treatment. Another passenger in the Chrysler, Yavonne Mayes, 19, of Houston, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Peterbilt, 52-year-old Gerard Damon of Humble, was uninjured in the crash.

The DPS is investigating the crash.

Common Causes of Automobile Accidents

There are many different reasons why automobile, 18-wheeler, and motorcycle accidents occur, including driver negligence, driver inattention, texting and driving, speeding, fatigue, failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign or private drive, running a red light, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. While the factors listed above are the main causes of most accidents, there may also be other factors involved, which is why it’s important that an investigation be conducted before evidence disappears, especially in cases involving a fatality.  At Joel A. Gordon & Associates we will act quickly to secure accident scene photos, interview witnesses, obtain police records, and secure other valuable evidence needed to win your case.  Call now for a free consultation
