Zyra Longoria Killed in Houston Four-Vehicle Crash on Highway 59 at Chimney Rock

Houston, Texas (October 12, 2021) – One of the three children who were injured Saturday afternoon in a four-vehicle crash in Houston has died, according to the police.

Zyra Longoria, 6, succumbed to her injuries on Sunday, October 10.

The crash happened around 3:55 p.m., October 9, on Highway 59 at Chimney Rock.

Police said a Honda was weaving in and out of the southbound lanes of the highway when it struck an 18-wheeler. The Honda kept driving and hit a red Mercedes before hitting a box truck.

Longoria was ejected from the Honda during the crash and was taken to the hospital, where she died the next day.

Two other children in the Honda, a 4-year-old and a 2-year-old, were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. They were Longoria’s younger half-brothers.

The Honda driver, Paul Rodriguez,30, was arrested and has been charged with murder, intoxicated assault, and driving while intoxicated (DWI) with a child passenger. His bond was set at $250,000.

A GoFundMe page has been created for donations.

The police are conducting the investigation.

In Texas, a driver is legally intoxicated after consuming alcohol if their blood alcohol content (BAC) is .08% or higher. A driver is also considered intoxicated if they don’t have the normal use of their mental or physical faculties by reason of the introduction of alcohol. Alcohol however is not the only intoxicant, as drivers can become intoxicated by ingesting prescription and illegal drugs such as crack, marijuana, and cocaine.

Regardless of what substance caused the driver’s reaction time to become significantly altered, intoxication by any means can cause terrible accidents and injuries.

Innocent victims harmed by drunk drivers are entitled to compensation for their injuries, including but not limited to medical expenses; lost wages; pain and suffering and mental anguish; physical impairment and disability; and most importantly, punitive damages to deter future conduct. If a death occurred because of a drunk driver, you will want a knowledgeable accident lawyer to bring a wrongful death action against the drunk driver.
