Carlos Olvera Killed in Randall County Car-Train Crash on U.S. 60 at FM 168

Randall County, Texas (December 31, 2019) – One person was killed in a car-train crash Monday morning in Randall County, west of Canyon, according to the DPS.

The fatal crash happened just before 6:00 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. 60 Farm-to-Market 168 near Umbarger.

DPS said Carlos Olvera, 21, of Friona, was driving southbound on FM 168, approaching the intersection when he ran a stop sign and traveled across all lanes of US 60 and into a barrow ditch south of US 60.

Olvera then hit a dirt embankment and continued heading southbound until he reached the railroad tracks, where he hit one set of tracks, and the car rolled over onto the second set of tracks where it was hit by a train.

Olvera was pronounced at the scene. He was not wearing a seatbelt.

No one on the train was injured.

The crash remains under investigation.
