2 Port Arthur Women Killed, 3 Children Injured in Jefferson County Wrong-Way Crash

Wrong-Way Crash on Hwy. 73 in Winnie

Jefferson County, TX – Two Port Arthur women were killed and three children suffered serious injuries following a wrong-way head-on collision on State Highway 73 in Winnie Saturday night, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The DPS has identified the deceased women as 38-year-old Hillary Newton and 45-year-old Blanco Sandino, both from Port Arthur.

The fatal crash occurred at approximately 9:15 p.m. on Saturday, July 4, on State Highway 73 at mile marker 742, east of State Highway 124.

Preliminary investigation indicates that Newton was driving a 2012 Chrysler sedan westbound in the eastbound lanes when she collided head-on with an eastbound 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Sandino

Both Newton and Sandino sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene.

Three juvenile passengers riding in the Chevrolet Tahoe, a 14-year-old, a 16-year-old, and a 12-year-old, were transported to area hospitals with suspected serious injuries.

The Texas Department of Public Safety continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal wrong-way crash.
