Kaufman County, TX – Five people were killed and several others were injured Saturday afternoon in a multi-vehicle accident in Kaufman County near Terrell, according to the Texas DPS.
The deadly accident happened around 2:40 p.m., June 28, in the westbound lanes of I-20, just east of Hiram Road.
DPS said Alexis Osmani Gonzalez-Companioni, 27, was driving an 18-wheeler when he fell asleep behind the wheel and crashed into an F-150 and two other 18-wheelers. One of the 18-wheelers jack-knifed and struck a Jeep Compass, a Ford Mustang, and a Honda passenger vehicle.
Four of the five people in the F-150 were killed in the accident. One other person in the Jeep was also killed.
At least one person was listed in critical condition.
Gonzalez-Companioni was arrested and is facing charges of manslaughter and a count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was being held at the Kaufman County jail on a $1,500,000 bond.
The Texas DPS is investigating the accident.

The deadly collision occurred around 2:40 p.m., June 28, on Interstate 20, just east of Hiram Road.
Authorities said three 18-wheeler tractor/trailers and four passenger vehicles were involved in the collision.
Four people were killed in the collision.
Two other people sustained major injuries and several others sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The injured victims were taken to Dallas hospitals for treatment.
The accident temporarily closed 1-20.
The authorities are investigating the accident.
