Three People Injured in 3-vehicle Crash on US-281 at County Road 129 in Alice

According the Texas Department of Public Safety, the incident began at about 2:45 a.m. on July 15 when a tractor trailer traveling southbound on US-281 at County Road 129 experienced a tire blow-out causing the truck roll onto its side, spilling its contents onto the roadway.

Alice, TX – Three people were injured, one critically, following a three-vehicle crash involving two tractor-trailers in Alice early Monday morning.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the incident began at about 2:45 a.m. on July 15 when a tractor-trailer traveling southbound on US-281 at County Road 129 experienced a tire blow-out causing the truck to roll onto its side, spilling its contents onto the roadway.

The driver of the truck, Ricardo Betancourt, 48, of Mission, escaped uninjured, but the entire southbound lane of the highway was blocked, DPS said.

Reportedly, 67-year-old Mitchell Reinitz of McAllen, Texas stopped at the scene to help Betancourt after witnessing the incident.

Moments later, a second tractor-trailer, operated by 38-year-old Jeffrey Walker of San Antonio, crashed into the overturned truck. Both Betancourt and Walker sustained severe injuries in the crash and were transported to a local hospital where they are currently in stable condition.

Reinitz was critically injured in the crash. He was initially taken to a local hospital in Alice, but was later transferred to a hospital in Corpus Christi. Authorities said Reinitz remains in critical condition.

No additional information regarding the crash was provided.

The incident remains under investigation.
