Bishop Arts, TX – A man was killed Sunday night in a hit-and-run accident in Bishop Arts, according to the police.

The deadly accident happened around 10:25 p.m. on October 12 in the 400 block of West Davis Street.

Police said Jose Benitez was crossing the street when he was struck by a white SUV that then crashed into a parked car.

Benitez was pronounced dead at the scene.

The SUV driver, John Anthony Alvarez, 29, fled the scene on foot after the accident.

The driver of the parked car that was hit saw Alvarez before he fled the scene.

Alvarez was later found in a neighborhood near the accident scene. He appeared to have been intoxicated. His lawyer said he had been arrested in 2021 for DWI and had been sentenced to 15 months, probation in April 2021.

Alvarez was arrested after police discovered the involved SUV was registered to him. He was booked into the Dallas County jail on Monday, October 13. He is facing charges of intoxication manslaughter, collision involving death, and collision involving death with a vehicle. As of Tuesday, October 14, he remained at the jail on $251,000 bond.

The police are investigating the accident.
