Corpus Christi, TX – Two people were killed after a wrong-way driver on Interstate Highway 37 caused a horrific crash that killed two people from Corpus Christi Monday evening, according to the Texas Highway Patrol.

According to Texas Highway Patrol, Junior Velasquez, 32, of San Antonio, was driving a 2016 Dodge Ram 2500 the wrong way in the northbound lanes of Interstate Highway 37 near mile marker 53 when it collided head-on with a Volkswagen Atlas traveling northbound in the inside lane
The impact caused the Atlas to drive off the roadway, coming to rest against the center median cable barrier, police said.
According to the highway patrol, the Atlas caught fire trapping the driver and the passenger. Several motorists stopped and tried to pull the two people from the burning vehicle.
Unfortunately, both the driver and passenger, identified as Joseph Thompson, 45, and, Jessica Thompson, 44, from Corpus Christi died in the collision and were declared dead by Judge Donnie Watkins.
Preliminary investigation revealed that Velasquez was intoxicated at the time of the collision. Velasquez was arrested and charged with two counts of Intoxication Manslaughter.
After obtaining medical clearance from Christus Spohn Hospital in Beeville, Velasquez was taken to Live Oak County Jail.
The accident remains under investigation.
