Navasota, TX – A police officer was among two people killed in a collision that happened as authorities were pursuing a suspect in Navasota on Wednesday afternoon, according to College Station PD.

The incident happened on Highway 6 near FM 3090 on January 15.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, College Station police officers responded to a report of a woman trying to cash a fraudulent check at around 3:09 p.m. at Prosperity Bank.

When the officers confronted the suspect, she fled the area in a black 2023 Jeep Wrangler heading south on Highway 6.

Police began pursuing the suspect but stopped after a short while and DPS troopers took over.

Shortly after, the suspect collided head-on with a marked Navasota Police Department Chevrolet Tahoe as the suspect headed southbound in the northbound lanes of Highway 6.

The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver of the Patrol vehicle involved in the accident, identified as Sergeant Mark Butler, was taken to CHI St. Joseph Hospital – Grimes Hospital, where he died.

The suspect’s identity was not immediately released.

The incident remains under investigation.
