Houston, TX – A woman was critically injured after she was struck and thrown off an overpass in northeast Houston after her vehicle broke down on the roadway. Two other people, including a Houston police officer, were also injured in the accident, according to the Houston Police Department.

The incident happened at about 9 p.m. on October 6 on the I-69 (Eastex Freeway) near Laura Koppe Road.

According to the Houston PD, the incident began when a woman’s car broke down in one of the southbound lanes of Interstate 69. The woman turned the car’s hazard lights on and exited the vehicle to call for a tow truck.

The woman was standing outside of her car when she was struck by another, sending her over the retaining wall, where she fell somewhere between 25 and 30 feet, HPD said.

The woman was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

At around 10:12 p.m. as officers were investigating the incident at the scene, another vehicle, operated by a suspected DWI driver, crashed into the HPD cruiser.

HPD said the female driver had two children, ages 3 and 6 years, with her in the car at the time of the collision.

The driver suffered minor injuries in the incident. The two kids were not injured.

The female driver is facing charges of driving while intoxicated with children in the car and other charges related to the collision into the HPD unit, as per the HPD.

The Houston police officer was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital and is expected to be okay.

The incident remains under investigation.
